Contributions

As an intern at CST, my position was graphic design, video, and multimedia specialists. I worked on projects that ranged from poster designs, infographic design, illustrations, and videos.

Due to confidentiality, I am not able to share all the challenging and comprehensive video projects that I worked on, from filming to post-production, but I would enjoy discussing my experience working on them over some coffee! However, below is I have shared one of the most successful video projects that I have worked on as well as some graphic design works.

A Step in the Right Direction

Video Projects

Following the first CST go-live in Lions-gate Hospital, it was important to share a patient's journey from her own perspective, across the CST team, other health organizations, and at external conferences. A Step in the Right Direction, is the fist patient story after a Go-live experience. Go-lives are when a hospital or medical center has gone live with the implementation of the new clinical information system.

Logline

Victoria Withers’ patient story starts with a friendly tennis match on Vancouver’s North Shore. In a heated volley, Victoria dove for the ball. Suddenly she went down, overwhelmed with pain.

Process

For this project, I was given a two-hour interview video where I had to cut it down into a two-minute video where it tells a story of a patient's journey post-CST go-live. What was important here, was to keep the crucial and meaningful dialogues while creating a short storyline from it. To do this I cut down the two-hour original video into small cuts, and took out the repetitive dialogues, and chose the most suitable one. From here I was able to cut the video down into a five-minute video. Then I puzzled the cut-out footage into a storyline that you see in the video. Then I color corrected and cleared the sound using Adobe Audition to take out any extra or white noise from the original sound. Finally, I added a few b-rolls on the video to make the video more engaging.

Graphic Design and Illustrations

Asides from video production and edition, I worked as a graphic designer and illustrator during my internship at CST. I have created multiple newsletters, banners, and posters that were targeted for internal and external use. Examples include designing and illustrating a BBQ event poster for an event at the office, illustrating a newsletter banner for monthly Vancouver Coastal Health and CST news.

The figure presents an illustration of the new version of the Work On the Wheels.

Internal Designs

For a BBQ event at the CST office, I designed two different event poster versions for the two different CST offices. I have created all the illustrations on the posters using Adobe Illustrator. For this project, I had the independence to choose the style of illustration as well as the colors I want to work with as it was an internal project. I used my creativity to create a fun and engaging poster for this event which received positive feedback from the staff.

Other internal design projects include a poster for office renovations and an ice cream social events. Designed and illustrated the posters below using Adobe Illustrator.

External Designs

The Clinical & Systems Transformation (CST) is a joint initiative across three British Columbia health organizations, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), and Providence Health Care (PHC). Working with the communications team as a designer my job was to create various designs for the content being provided to other healthcare authorities.

Here I have created two different sizes for a PHC-CST all staff event that was being held at Saint Paul Hospital (SPH), to inform the SPH staff about the event prior to go-live. This poster was an external project for PHC.

I designed banners for the monthly newsletters for PHC, VCH, and BC Mental Health Substances Use and Services. These banners are and will be placed on top of the newsletter monthly.

Takeaway

Through this project, I learn how to learn the context and main users of an existing user interface application and help to make it better and improve it. The user testing conducted hep to understand how people will interact with an application and which helped me to come up with improvement ideas to increase the quality of an existing interface.
